Fire Steels for striking a fire
All our Fire Steels are replicas of original steels found at Fur Trade Posts, circa 17-19th centuries
“To strike fire with a flint and steel in the most common fashion, you will need three items: a properly tempered fire steel, a piece of agate, flint or jasper, and a quantity of charred cloth called ‘spunk’. These items may be stored in a peppermint tin with a leather divider to protect the spunk, and kept in your hunting bag (the word “spunk” is derived from two words: punk + spark)
A good steel will throw little orange parks when quickly brushed against the sharp edge of the flint. A piece of spunk is held near the edge of the flint on top, with the thumb, in order to catch the spark. Place the glowing spunk into a birds nest made of dried grass or frayed cottonwood bark, then blow through it, or better yet, wave it around in circles with your fingers forming a cage surrounding the nest. It will soon burst into flame. Drop it into your awaiting kindling to make your camp fire. (Birch bark burns nicely and is a great addition to your kindling.)”
